Reading Your Blood Test Results: What Do The Numbers Actually Mean?
If you have ever opened a blood test report and been confronted by a page full of abbreviations, numbers and reference ranges, you are not alone.
TSH. Ferritin. HbA1c. Active B12.
To a healthcare professional these are familiar markers. To everyone else, they can look like another language.
The good news is that the basic principles are much easier to understand than they first appear.
Here is a plain-English introduction to some of the markers you may see on a Liv Health blood test report.
First: What Is A Reference Range?
Most laboratory results are shown alongside a reference range.
This provides context for the result by showing the values typically expected for that particular test.
However, the range is not a simple dividing line between healthy and unhealthy.
Your age, sex, medical history, medications, symptoms and other blood results may all affect how an individual measurement should be interpreted.
That is why blood results are best understood as part of a wider picture rather than individual numbers in isolation.
TSH: Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
TSH stands for thyroid stimulating hormone.
It is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain and acts as a signal telling your thyroid gland how much thyroid hormone to produce.
TSH is therefore commonly used as one of the first markers when assessing thyroid function.
Broadly speaking, an elevated TSH may indicate that the body is having to signal the thyroid more strongly, while a low TSH can occur when thyroid hormone activity is higher.
Other thyroid measurements and your symptoms may also be relevant, so TSH should not be interpreted completely on its own.
Thyroid function can influence areas including:
- Energy
- Metabolism
- Body temperature
- Heart rate
- Mood
- Concentration
Ferritin: Your Stored Iron
Ferritin is a protein that stores iron within the body.
Measuring ferritin gives us an indication of your body’s iron reserves.
This is different from simply measuring haemoglobin.
Haemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein inside red blood cells, while ferritin tells us more about the amount of stored iron available to the body.
Low iron stores can sometimes be associated with symptoms such as:
- Fatigue
- Reduced exercise tolerance
- Poor concentration
- Dizziness
- Hair shedding
There are many possible reasons why ferritin levels can change, so an unexpected result should be interpreted appropriately rather than self-diagnosed.
Active B12
Vitamin B12 has several important roles within the body, including supporting normal red blood cell formation and nervous system function.
Some blood tests measure total Vitamin B12, while Active B12 looks specifically at the fraction that is available for cells to use.
This can provide additional information when assessing B12 status.
Low B12 levels may sometimes be associated with symptoms including fatigue, weakness, neurological symptoms and problems with concentration.
Because these symptoms can have many different causes, the blood result needs to be viewed alongside the rest of your health information.
HbA1c: Your Longer-Term Blood Sugar Picture
HbA1c is a measure of how much glucose has attached to haemoglobin within your red blood cells.
Because red blood cells circulate for several months, HbA1c gives an indication of your average blood glucose over approximately the previous two to three months.
This makes it different from a single blood glucose reading, which only reflects your glucose level at that particular moment.
HbA1c is widely used when assessing long-term blood sugar control.
Your result may therefore provide useful information about metabolic health and whether further assessment is appropriate.
Testosterone
Testosterone is commonly associated with men’s health, but it is present and biologically important in both men and women.
In men, testosterone contributes to areas including:
- Sexual function
- Muscle mass
- Bone health
- Red blood cell production
- Energy and wellbeing
Women also produce testosterone in smaller amounts, where it contributes to sexual function, musculoskeletal health and wider hormonal balance.
Testosterone levels can vary naturally and may be influenced by factors such as age, time of day, health conditions and certain medications.
Oestradiol
Oestradiol is one of the body’s main forms of oestrogen.
It plays an important role in female reproductive health, menstrual function and bone health, but it is also present in men.
Oestradiol results can be particularly dependent on context. In women, for example, levels naturally vary throughout the menstrual cycle.
This means a hormone number is rarely useful without understanding when the sample was taken and why it was being measured.
One Number Rarely Tells The Whole Story
Blood testing becomes far more useful when you stop looking at individual values in isolation.
Imagine feeling consistently tired.
There may be several potentially relevant markers:
- Ferritin and iron
- Vitamin B12 and folate
- Vitamin D
- Thyroid markers
- Blood glucose control
- Hormones
That does not mean one of those markers must be responsible. It simply shows why a broader picture can sometimes be more informative than focusing on one result.
What Should You Do With Your Results?
Start by understanding what was actually tested and how each result relates to the wider panel.
If a result requires medical attention, appropriate clinical advice should always take priority.
For many people, however, testing is also about creating a baseline.
